Golf Chipping Tips |
Imagination and flair (and occasionally luck!) are sometimes needed around the greens, so give yourself a chance by improving your golf shot arsenal and learning these shots to help lower your scores.

GOLF CHIPPING TIP #1: BALL AGAINST THE COLLAR
A ball resting against the collar of the green (and against the light rough) looks like a tough shot, but in fact it really is quite easy to get yourself into a reasonable position from here.
Essentially, what you are doing next is hitting a controlled “thin” shot.
- Set up with a wedge in your hand and pretend it’s a putter (strange, I know)
- Grip down the club shaft an inch or two so that the club hovers around the equator of the ball
- Simply make a putting stroke with the club, ensuring your wrists stay firm
This eliminates any chance of catching the grass behind the ball or getting the club stuck in the grass, which makes judging distance a difficult task. This is a really useful shot to have around the greens and provides you with a much tighter degree of control when trying to get the ball close to the hole (or ideally in it!). |

GOLF CHIPPING TIP #2: PLUGGED LIE IN BUNKER
An extremely nasty lie to have, but one that is easier to get out than you might think.
- Open the face of the club and hover a few centimetres behind the ball
- The secret is to get your left shoulder low – and keep it there
- This then makes you hinge your wrists sharply on your backswing and drill your downswing into the sand
- If done right, it is possible to get a slight amount of spin on the ball
