Developing feel on the putting green is one of the most important areas to focus on and improve if you want to get better at golf. After all, for most of us, it takes up around 40-45% of our total shots during a typical round, so it makes sense to practice this area of your game more often.Strangely though, many of us don’t do this and value practicing our driving or iron shots as more important at the range. Here are some great golf putting tips / putting golf instruction for you to follow and improve your game.
GOLF PUTTING TIP #1: RIGHT HAND ONLY
The right hand is the driving force in the putting stroke and dictates how far the ball will travel by applying the relevant amount of power.
The drill below is designed to help you make a smooth and rhythmical stroke to help you improve judgement of distance and power.
Initially set up with both hands on the club to ensure your hands are in the correct position
Take your left hand off the club and place it behind your back
Proceed to make a putting stroke
You will find you are forced into making a smoother putting stroke
Practice this drill at different distances to develop your level of touch and feel around the greens for all your putts
GOLF PUTTING TIP #2: CHAIN REACTION
This drill might seem strange to everyone else on the putting green, but will definitely help your feel out on the golf course.
Set in the middle of the green with 4 or 5 balls.
Pick a hole to play towards
Before allowing yourself time to think about the line, length, speed, etc, just take one look at the hole and just hit the putt
While that ball is still rolling, take another ball, take another quick look at the hole again and hit the next ball and continue this in quick succession
The idea is that the putts you are making here are completely instinctive and a reaction from the body to the visual information the brain is receiving.
Complete this drill at different distances for 5 minutes before you go out onto the course to improve your confidence on the greens.
GOLF PUTTING TIP #3: HUNT DOWN THE HOLE
Players do forget that golf is a target sport and often get bogged down with technique and stroke, which can confuse a golfer at times.
Try this simple drill to free your mind of the technical side of things:
Try hitting putts while looking directly at the hole, as this helps the body to understand the relationship between the stroke and distance
The end result is a great way for developing feel with your putter
